OUR DEPARTMENT

Introduction :

Every public institution takes birth in the thoughts of a visionary. A Degree college to come into existence in the early decades of Independent India certainly needs the vision of a munificent visionary. There was a sense of real urgency in the air to educate the young men and women.

YA Government College for Women, Chirala was founded in the year 1966 as a composite college offering education at Intermediate and Undergraduate levels. The Department of English is as old as the college itself. It has a saga of Fifteen years of imparting English language to young female adults hailing from all sections of the society.

The guiding light has always been the idea that educating a girl is educating a family. An educated mother is more than a complement to the public education system. Many a young woman passed through the college earning a graduation degree in their three years of study as enlightened individuals. Their contribution as government servants, employees in the private sector and mothers cannot be put in words.

English as a second language has a unique place in our curriculum. It is the language of International commerce, law, medicine, engineering, technology and information technology. Possession of moderate degree of proficiency in English reading, writing and speaking is a token for entering a respectable government or private job.

It is the language of International communication. India proudly flaunts the fact that we have large pool of youth who are proficient in English communication skills.

The Department of English of this college has been successfully contributing its own share to this pool of young women. The department has always been manned with dedicated teachers who treat the students as their own children. The department has the awareness at the back of its mind about the deprived conditions from which many of the students emerge. This awareness manifests itself in the sympathetic approach of the English faculty to all student related issues that include not only teaching, providing study materials, but also offering financial assistance, training them in interview and employability skills, emotional support and career guidance. The department plays a key role in all round development of personality of the students. The department of English follows a carefully designed annual curricular plan in tune with the university undergraduate academic schedule. It conducts a number of curricular and co-curricular activities as part of its curricular plan. The teaching approach is mostly student friendly and student centered.
